after months of waiting

I can now start doing pull-ups at the newly-constructed fitness park, which is just next to the void deck of my apartment - that is so convenient for me! Also, the bars are not slippery unlike those at East Coast Park. Hopefully by June I would be able to do 10 pull-ups in one go...

thrashed

This is so fun considering that I don't participate in track-and-field events. I finished 2nd last for the 3000m finals amongst more than 20 participants. I expected it, because the others were either from cross country, athletics or a sports CCA.

By the 200m mark I was already right at the back, more than 20 meters behind the others. The worst part was that my chest started to feel tight almost immediately - when I still had 7 more rounds to cover. I didn't give up. Besides, the supporters from my house cheered me on, and that gave me a lot of encouragement. I tried my best, but I knew it was almost impossible to catch up with the others as they had a lot more stamina than me.

Eventually in the last 300m or so, I overtook another runner (also from Bayley House!) and dashed towards the finishing line. My timing was 14.16 - a drop in standard compared to 13.37 which I clocked last year. The good news is that all of us qualified to score participation points for our respective houses (qualifying time for U17 is 14.46) so it was worth participating...

a test of endurance

Taking part in the 3000m run for Bayley House this Friday. My aim is to finish within the top 8 positions. Anything under 14 min would be ideal since the qualifying time is 14.46 - and I am not in a sports CCA.

payoff

After today's 2.4 km time trial, I realised that I am gradually regaining much of my fitness. My timing was 11'06. It's a long story...

In lower secondary I seldom exercised. Not surprisingly I took almost 12 minutes to cover 2.4 km. I decided to jog three times a week, each time covering 3.2 km, in order to improve my fitness. It paid off very well.

Last year I managed to run 2.4 km in 10'28. That was my best timing ever. However after that my knees began to give way. They started to hurt after running for only 100m. I wanted to see the doctor immediately but my mother advised me to monitor my knee condition for a while first. In the end, I stopped jogging altogether.

After a couple of months' rest my knees felt stronger, so I decided to resume jogging. By then I had no more stamina, so I reduced both the frequency of my training and the distance to cover. I felt greatly discouraged. The only consolation was that my knees had recovered after months of passive recovery without consulting a doctor.

During the December holidays I bought a new pair of running shoes because my other pair had been completely worn out. I found that I could perform slightly better with the new pair and that gave me an incentive to increase the distance to what I covered in the past.

I may not be as fit as I had been last year, but there is still hope. Now that I have resumed my three-times-a-week training, my target is to improve my 2.4 km timing by 30 seconds (which was my timing last year). I also take care of my knees by making sure that I do not stress them too often.
